The biggest mistake people make is expecting reward-app pocket money to replace a paycheck, or expecting a gig app to be effortless.

What to know about each kind
- Reward apps. You earn points or coins for playing games, trying apps and offers, answering surveys and watching short videos, then cash out to PayPal or a gift card. They're the easiest to start and fit into spare minutes, but they pay pocket money. Offers and game milestones pay the most per task. - Cashback and receipt apps. Apps like Rakuten, Ibotta and Fetch give you a little back on shopping you'd do anyway. It's not new money so much as a discount, but it adds up for regular shoppers. Rakuten, for example, pays out every quarter once you have more than $5.
- Selling apps. eBay, Mercari, Poshmark and Facebook Marketplace turn clutter into cash. Great for a one-off boost, less so as a steady income.
- Testing and research apps. Usability-testing sites and paid research panels pay more per task than surveys, but tasks come and go and you often need to speak your thoughts aloud on a recording.
- Gig apps. Delivery, rideshare, errand and freelance apps pay a real hourly income. They're the most lucrative option here, but they're work: you'll need to meet their requirements, and costs like fuel come off what you earn.
Legit or fake?
How to spot fake money making apps
App stores are full of apps that promise real money and never pay. Walk away if you see any of these:
- Huge promised earnings. "$100 a day for playing games" is an advert, not an app. Legit reward apps pay cents to a few dollars an hour.
- A cash-out goal that keeps moving. If the minimum grows as you get close, or you "need one more task", you'll never reach it.
- A fee to withdraw. No legit app charges you to unlock your own earnings.
- Requests for passwords. A real app needs your PayPal email to pay you, never your PayPal password.
- No visible business model. Legit apps are paid by advertisers, researchers or retailers. If you can't tell where the money comes from, be careful.
- A request to deposit money. The US Federal Trade Commission warns about "task" apps that pay a few small amounts to build trust, then ask for a deposit (often in crypto) to unlock your earnings. Its advice: never pay anyone to get paid.
